Hopscotch That Transcends Time

Classic games like hopscotch have been enjoyed by generations and continue to offer fun and active play for grandparents and grandchildren alike. Hopscotch is simple to set up and requires minimal equipment, something to toss, making it accessible and easy to enjoy.

Hopscotch only requires some chalk and a stone, and a little bit of creativity. You can push the limits if you think beyond just numbers and squares. Think of nature or space themed versions, and versions with letters, not numbers. Many times hopscotch can be found at a local park or playground but indoor and portable versions can also be purchased for home use, ready for instant use at any time.

Four Square: The Precursor to Pickleball

Another classic game is four square or boxball, as some have become to know it.  Four square is a game that offers a wide range of physical, social, and cognitive benefits for players of all ages. Whether played in a schoolyard, park, or backyard, it’s an engaging, fast-paced game that encourages teamwork, coordination, and strategic thinking by bouncing a ball back and forth within...four squares.

Pickleball has become one of the fastest growing recreation activities in the history of sport. Older adults and seniors have led the charge, driven by their passion for competitive game play, social interaction, and desire to remain active and fit. But it often leads to sprained or broken ankles, wrists, and other physical injuries because of it's vigorous level of activity. A person needs to possess a moderate level of overall fitness, coordination, core balance, and flexibility in order to truly capture the full game experience. Generally speaking not all older adults and seniors are not capable of meeting the physical demands needed to play.

Four square is a great game to form the physical foundation for Pickleball. It can be played using chalk and a large bouncy ball on a flat, paved surface outside or you can purchase an indoor mat here. Four people can play at a time, rotating participants when the ball is deemed "out".  CLICK here to access a great video showing how to play four square.

Tips for Making Play Safe and Fun

Safety is paramount when engaging in most physical activities, especially with multiple generations involved. Ensure everyone is wearing appropriate footwear and clothing for the activities planned. Keep a first aid kit handy for any minor injuries and make sure everyone has prior approval from their medical care provider to participate in these active games.

Stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade, and use sunscreen to protect against harmful UV rays if outside. Clear the play area of any hazards, and establish clear rules for each game to ensure everyone understands how to play safely. Have fun!!
