The scorching heat of the summer has everyone abuzz, sparking concerns over its impact on summer camp schedules and activities nationwide, especially for the young campers who typically spend their days outdoors. Although many camps will still operate outdoors with temperatures over 100° F,  here are some ideas for easy, refreshing indoor and outdoor games to keep campers entertained and cool during hot summer days.

1) Water Balloon Toss

One fun game to beat the heat at summer camp is Water Balloon Toss. This classic game is perfect for a hot day because it keeps campers cool and provides plenty of laughs. To play, divide campers into pairs and give each pair a water balloon. The goal is to toss the water balloon back and forth without dropping it or breaking it. As campers get more comfortable, you can increase the distance between partners or add obstacles to make it more challenging. Just make sure to have plenty of water balloons on hand for endless fun!

2) Pass-The-Sponge Relay Race

Another great game to keep campers cool in the summer heat is the Pass-The-Sponge Relay Race. This game is not only fun, but it also provides a refreshing way to cool off. Divide campers into teams and set up a relay race course. Each team will need a bucket of water and a large sponge. The first camper in each team will soak the sponge in the water bucket and then pass it to the next teammate. The goal is to pass the wet sponge down the line as quickly as possible. The team that finishes first wins! This game is a great way to promote teamwork and keep everyone cool.

4) Sprinkler Limbo

Combine the classic game of limbo with the refreshing fun of a sprinkler with Sprinkler Limbo. Set up a sprinkler in an open area and adjust the water spray to create a limbo line. Campers can take turns trying to limbo under the water spray without getting wet. As the game progresses, adjust the limbo line to make it more challenging. If a camper touches the water spray or gets wet, they are out of the game. The last camper remaining dry wins! Sprinkler Limbo is a great way to beat the heat and have a splashing good time.

5) Ice Block Treasure Hunt

Cool off and have an adventure with the Ice Block Treasure Hunt. Before the activity, freeze small toys or prizes in a large block of ice. Hide the ice block somewhere in the camp area and provide campers with tools to excavate it, such as spoons or small shovels. Divide campers into teams and set them loose to find and retrieve the hidden treasures. The team that successfully retrieves the most treasures from the ice block wins. This game not only keeps campers cool, but it also encourages teamwork and problem-solving skills.
